Bering Sea Survival - Participant Activity
Bering Sea Survival
Bering Sea Survival is a team activity which will improve the quality of group problem-solving and decision-making. This is achieved through the use of the ?tried and tested? process of having participants first respond to the survival problem individually. They are then asked to work as a group, using consensus decision-making, to create a priority listing of survival strategies and resources. The scores are then compared against the expert ranking provided by Alaska Sea Grant/University of Alaska. Effective teams generally produce better solutions than individuals alone.
Uses of the Bering Sea Survival
? a stand-alone exercise for team-building training
? assessment centre activities
? to measure the current level of team-working
? re-vitalizing an existing team needing a ?booster?
Scenario
The Bering Sea Survival activity describes the events which turn an exciting vacation trip into a potentially life changing tragedy. A charter-boat trip ends in disaster and the vacationers are stranded on a small uninhabited island between Nome and Solomon. The survivors are soaking wet and it is icy cold. The participants need to determine an appropriate survival strategy and then make the best use of rescued items.
A Unique Support Tool
The Bering Sea Survival DVD has been developed by Alaska Sea Grant/University of Alaska. Based on their best practice survival approach, the DVD describes the strategies needed to survive in such a harsh climate. The DVD includes input from REAL-LIFE survivors about their experiences. This truly brings the outdoors into the training environment. Make the de-briefing both exciting and learn from the expert presenters rationale about survival decisions.
The Participant Resource provides the background information needed to make both the individual and group decisions. It includes scoring, de-briefing, and helpful insights on teamdevelopment processes.
The expert rationale is included in the participant materials and is explained, and described graphically through the accompanying DVD.
The Facilitator Guide provides all the support information needed to administer and debrief
the activity.
